Training tips

Valuable tips from our athletes on all things triathlon

Swimming

  • Moderate short warm-up at the pool edge
  • Short, approx. 5-minute warm-up swim
  • Focus on technique training for the rest of the training program

  • Technique training should be a component of almost every swimming session
  • Regular training of all four swimming strokes

  • Body position in the water (which is extremely important) often depends on the position of the head
  • Therefore, lift the head only slightly out of the water to breathe; this results in less rotation

  • Start with shorter distances and focus on technique training - ideally train with a coach

Cycling

  • Consume sufficient food and drink during a session, 40-60 g of carbohydrates per hour
  • Increase the pace only towards the end; start at a moderate pace for the first half hour

  • Vary intensities
  • In addition to a good foundation built through volume, hill intervals should also be included

  • Not to be underestimated and to be carried out more often are the relaxed base-training sessions, without looking at the clock

  • Make plans to go cycling with friends, as this makes longer sessions even more fun

Running

  • A specific warm-up tailored to individual issues is essential for load tolerance. You cannot run too slowly!

  • Incorporate running drills and accelerations into your training, with a focus on technique.

  • For longer runs, starting at approx. 1 hour, you should carry nutrition (gels, bars) and consume it to compensate for energy loss –> this prevents exhaustion after the session.

  • At the end of an easy run, incorporate short, faster sprints (5x100m) while focusing on running technique. This leaves you with a good feeling after the run.
